‘Sue Jones-Davies has overturned a 30-year ban imposed by the town on Monty Python’s Life of Brian’. She says it is a “comedy classic” and its about time the ban was done away with.

It was considered blasphemous in certain quarters and Aberystwyth was no exception. The town slapped a ban on Monty Pythons Life of Brian in 1979 when they learned of its content.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian is an Irreverent satire of Biblical films and religious intolerance focuses on Brian, a Jew in Roman-occupied Judea. After joining up with an anti-Roman political organization, Brian is mistaken for a prophet, and becomes a reluctant Messiah. IMDB

The Mayor of Aberystwyth, and a co-star in the film, is lifting the ban and giving Life of Brian its own premiere 30 years on.

Sue Jones-Davis, Mayor, played the part of Brian’s girlfriend Judith in the Monty Python film. After much pleading from the town, Ms Davis has decided that it is time that The Life of Brian hits the big screen in Wales.

To add to the excitement of the night, 2 of the stars from the film will be attending. Michael Palin and Director, Terry Jones will be dressed to the nines for the un-veiling of their banned film.

After the sold-out, 120 seat showing, the pair will be holding a Q and A session in the auditorium for the audience, to round off the evening.

They said they like the fact that the film had been banned in quite a few towns, saying it added flavour and mystique to it and of course, it didn’t harm the sales. The fact that there was a ‘packed-House’ in Aberystwyth tonight just proves their point. –

Monty Python’s zany film, Life of Brian, with its tag line, ‘The Immaculate Conception’ is a motion picture destined to offend nearly two thirds of the civilized world and severely annoy the other third’.

Brian is born in a stable on Christmas, right next to You Know Who. The wise men appear and begin to distribute gifts. The star moves further, so they take it all back and move on. This is how Brian’s life goes.

The Jews are looking for a release from the Romans, Spiritual and political decay, keep looking for signs and a group decides Brian is the Messiah. He cannot convince them he is not. He joins the Peoples’ Front of Judea, one of several dozen separatist groups who actually do nothing, but really hate the Romans.

While not about Jesus, it is about those who hadn’t time, or interest to listen to his message; many Political and Social comments. –

How interesting that the film was banned in many places when it was released, and is only just getting its premiere in Aberyswyth now! I’ve never been a Monty Python fan, but still find it quite funny that many places banned Life of Brian.

You really are an incredibly talented writer, and always I enjoy reading new articles from you. Whatever you choose to write about, you always cover the subject so well. I’m so proud of you.

The film was nothing short of brilliant. To ban it is just silly I tell you, silly.
