The Bot Fly Hatching Under Human Skin
Whilst in Panama, this unfortunate man was bitten by a mosquito that was host to Bot Fly eggs which eventually hatched under his skin.
Oestridae (commonly called bot flies or botflies) is a family of Oestroidea. It is one of several families of hairy flies whose larvae live as parasites within the bodies of mammals. There are approximately 150 known species worldwide.
Only one bot fly species attacks humans, Dermatobia hominis.
Botflies can, on occasion, lay their eggs on humans. The larva then poses an extremely painful sub-epidermal condition because of their spines.
Removal processes include placing raw meat on to the area, which in theory will coax the larva out. Another option is to use the tree sap of the matatorsalo found in Costa Rica, which will kill the larva, yet leave its body in the skin.
Additionally, one can attempt to seal the breathing hole of the larva with glue and or tape and then, after a day, squeeze out the suffocated, dead larva.
These things are ‘Big’ and this YouTube shows them being extracted from the man’s skin!
The poor guy is bleeding all over the place and has gaping holes in his back.
Definitely a bit of a stomach churner this one. -

Nasty, those things are massive! I definitely wouldn’t like to have those living under my skin. I quite enjoyed watching the video though - I found it oddly fascinating!
